Skin tags are benign or non-malignant tumors found in both men and women. Skin tags are also called skin polyps or acrochordons and are found on the face, neck, eyelids and armpits. Skin tags are basically harmless and painless; but they can be irritating at times.
Babies also develop skin tags, which are commonly seen in front of the external ear’s opening. These baby skin tags are known as preauricular tags, and are quite normal on a baby. However if you find that there is some bleeding, swelling or any discharge from the baby skin tag, it is better to seek medical advice as it may signify some other medical condition.
Physical examination of the baby
In such cases, the health care provider will take the baby’s medical history and do a physical examination. You will be asked if only one ear is affected or both and if there are other symptoms present. The health care provider will also ask if the baby responds to sounds.
Then, the baby is examined for other disorder signs that are associated with preauricular tags and pits. If the baby does not seem to respond well to sounds, a hearing test will also be done.
Usually, baby skin tags are passed on genetically from the parents as an inherited tendency and there is not much to worry about. Sometimes, the baby may also inherit the genetic syndrome Treacher-Collins Syndrome where you find skin tags in front of the infant’s ears.
Baby skin tags may also arise through sinus tract problems where there is an abnormal connection between the skin and tissue underneath it. Sometimes, during the baby’s development process, excess skin folds together to form a skin tag near the baby’s ear.
Even friction or irritation that arises with the skin rubbing against itself leads to baby skin tags. No matter what the cause of the baby skin tag may be, they are all harmless.
